| Description: About 8 inches long, it has
a red head with black body above and white under parts, rump and wing patches.
The female lays 4 - 7 white eggs that hatch in 2 weeks. The young leave
the nest 27 - 30 days after hatching.
Habitat: These woodpeckers live in farmlands, open woodlands, yards and orchards. They nest in holes in dead trees or limbs. Foods: They eat acorns, insects, earthworms, fruit and berries. They'll eat sap from holed made by sapsuckers, as well as other birds eggs and nestling. Facts: Look for woodpeckers on tree trunks, using their strong bills to dig out wood boring insects. The red headed is the only eastern woodpecker with a totally red head. The solid black back and large white wing patches are good field marks. Young have brown heads. Male Red bellied Woodpecker of the Southeast has entire crown and back of neck red, and black and white barring on the back. The western Acorn Woodpecker has black back chin, and breast band. store food in a cache and conceal it with bits of wet wood and defend it
from other birds.
