Canada: Whale caught in marine line appears off Nova Scotia coast
Halifax, Nova Scotia – The Whale entangled
in marine line off the Massachusetts coast has made its way to Nova Scotia
waters, and scientist made plans Tuesday for another rescue effort.
Officials with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans said the North Atlantic
right whale, an endangered species, was 80 miles off Chebucto Head, near
Halifax. The whale, nicknamed Churchill, is one of about 300 left in the
world. Churchill was spotted June 8 off Cape Cod, Mass. Rescuers
have approached him five times but couldn’t remove a heavy nylon marine
line causing an infection likely to kill him. A rescue attempt could
occur as early as Sunday, Conway said.
