Chincoteague tradition

Swim sends ponies to auction – Tourists gathered on Chincoteague Island at 3a.m. Wednesday, hoping the annual pony swim would begin early, but it was high tide in the Assateague Channel. Standing ankle-deep in mud, some grew impatient, some grew weary. But the water was too high, so everybody waited. Not a whinny could be heard, just the sound of angry marsh insects.

Finally, about 8:15a.m., the tide had receded enough, and the first pony plunged into the water, making its way across the channel. Thus began the 76th annual Chincoteague Pony Round-up and Swim. On Chincoteague Island after the swim, a foal is reunited with its mother.

The day’s events included a pony giveaway, entertainment and carnival attractions. The Pony Penning and Auction of Ponies begin today at 8a.m.
