Chincoteague:
Annual pony swim and auction
being held this week!
If you plan to go to the annual pony swim
and auction, here’s what you need to know: On Wednesday, ponies will
swim across Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Memorial Park on the east
side of the island, between 7a.m. and 1p.m. The event is free. There
is no parking at Memorial Park but free parking and a free shuttle are
available at Chincoteague High School.
After a brief rest, the ponies are herded
to the carnival grounds on Main Street where they can be viewed in a corral.
The first colt to come ashore will be given away at the carnival grounds,
the time to be announced. Thursday, the auction of ponies, yearlings or
younger, will be at the carnival grounds, 8a.m. to noon. The ponies, owned
by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co., will be sold only on this day.
If you but a pony, you must have a horse trailer to transport the foal.
Friday, ponies swim back to Assateague at a time to be announced.
